Clitoral Reduction and Reshaping Surgery for Clitoromegaly in Irvine, CA

About the Procedure

What Is Clitorectomy?

Clitoral reduction and reshaping, also referred to as clitorectomy, is an advanced surgical procedure that shortens an elongated clitoris and then reduces its projection by repositioning it into a more anatomically appropriate position, creating a more balanced, natural-looking vulvar appearance.

At Wei Aesthetic Institute in Irvine, Dr. Judy Wei provides individualized clitoral reduction surgery for women with clitoral enlargement, medically known as clitoromegaly. Clitoromegaly may be congenital or acquired, and causes can include hormonal or androgen exposure, endocrine conditions, medications, or naturally occurring anatomy.

When clitoropexy alone is not enough to correct a significantly elongated, drooping, or protruding clitoris, clitorectomy may be the best option. It is especially valuable for women whose primary concern is excess clitoral tissue volume. When the clitoral glans is also significantly enlarged, [clitoral glans reduction] is often performed at the same time.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Clitoral Reduction?

Clitorectomy may be appropriate for women who:

  • Have an enlarged or prominent clitoris

  • Have experienced clitoral enlargement related to hormonal or androgen exposure

  • Have naturally enlarged clitoral anatomy

  • Experience discomfort or irritation from an enlarged clitoris

  • Feel self-conscious about clitoral prominence

  • Desire a more proportionate vulvar appearance

  • Have completed an appropriate evaluation of any underlying medical cause

A consultation with Dr. Wei is essential to determine the cause of enlargement and the most appropriate surgical technique.

Who Is Not a Candidate?

Patients may not be candidates if they:

  • Have an active genital infection

  • Have an untreated hormonal or endocrine condition causing ongoing enlargement

  • Have medical conditions that make surgery unsafe

  • Have unrealistic expectations about appearance or sexual function

  • Are not medically optimized for elective surgery

When hormone therapy or another medical condition contributes to enlargement, the underlying cause should be evaluated and appropriately managed before elective surgical correction.

Benefits of Clitoral Reduction

For appropriately selected patients, clitorectomy offers several potential advantages:

  • Reduces the bulk of an enlarged clitoris

  • Reduces visible clitoral projection

  • Repositions the clitoris into a more natural position

  • Avoids the kinking or bulging that can occur when an elongated clitoris is treated with clitoropexy alone

  • Creates a more proportionate vulvar appearance

  • Provides longer-lasting results than clitoropexy alone

The primary goal is to reduce the bulk of an enlarged, elongated clitoris and to lift and support it in a more anatomically appropriate position. Each surgical plan is designed around the patient's anatomy, concerns, and functional goals.

How Is Clitoral Reduction Performed?

Following a comprehensive consultation, Dr. Wei evaluates the size, length, shape, and position of the clitoris and its surrounding anatomy. Every procedure is performed by Dr. Wei herself.

The surgical technique is customized to each patient. Clitorectomy involves carefully removing a portion of the clitoral shaft while preserving the important surrounding neurovascular structures. The clitoris is then repositioned into a more anatomically appropriate position to reduce its protrusion and projection.

The goal is to reduce tissue volume and projection while maintaining the function of the clitoris and its neurovascular structures.

Clitorectomy may be performed on its own or combined with [clitoral glans reduction], [clitoral hood reduction], [labiaplasty], or other vulvar procedures when appropriate.

Recovery and Results

Swelling, tenderness, and bruising are expected during the early healing period. Temporary changes in sensitivity are also common and typically resolve with time. Plan for a period of reduced physical activity after surgery, and follow all postoperative instructions carefully. That said, we discourage prolonged bed rest to help minimize postoperative complications.

As swelling subsides and the tissue heals, the clitoris gradually settles into its new size and position. Final results may take several months to fully develop.

You will receive detailed postoperative instructions on activity, hygiene, and sexual activity. In general, we recommend avoiding sexual activity for six weeks after surgery.

How Long Do Results Last?

Clitorectomy is designed to provide long-lasting results, and most patients will not need a repeat procedure in their lifetime. However, future hormonal changes, medications, aging, or underlying medical conditions may affect the tissue over time.
