About the Procedure

What is Mons Pubis?

The mons pubis is the area at the top of your groin, between the lower abdomen and genitalia. Women often gain some “puffiness” or fat in this area due to weight gain, pregnancy, or aging. This hormone-dependent fat in this area is normally exercise and diet-resistant. It often appears to be bloated or sagging, which can cause problems when wearing tight-fitting clothing. The removal of excess fat from the mons pubis can be done with either liposuction, monsplasty, or a combination of both procedures.

Mons Pubis Liposuction is a surgical procedure that eliminates excess fat under the skin in the mons pubis region. Liposuction can have great effects on patients with good skin elasticity. However, for patients with looser skin, it may make it even looser due to the deflation effect when fat is removed from the area. Monsplasty is often performed in combination with mons pubis liposuction because it removes the excess skin and fatty tissue as well.

How is Mons Pubis Liposuction done?

Anesthesia will be administered first. Then, a small incision will be made to access the fat with a thin tube called the cannula. Unwanted fat will be suctioned out through the cannula, then the incision will be closed with sutures.

How long is recovery? What does it look like? (Bruising, swelling, etc.)

The recovery process is different for everyone. Patients may shower on the second day following surgery. For ideal results, patients should wear compression garments for approximately two weeks per doctor’s instructions. Best to avoid exercise and unnecessary strain on the incision site for the first two weeks post-op. Normal activity can be resumed around six weeks.

It is normal for the treatment area to feel tender or bruised initially. Swelling may follow as well, so patients should wear compression garments to reduce swelling.

Who is a good candidate?

Women who have always felt self-conscious about the bulge in their upper pubic area, especially when wearing tight-fitting clothing, are great candidates for Mons Pubis Reduction surgeries. However, candidates must know that this procedure only changes the aesthetics and appearance of the area. It will not affect sexual functions, as there are other procedures for those purposes.

  • Should be at a stable weight considered appropriate for their height

  • Must meet certain health requirements; will review relevant medical records and prescription medication

  • May need to take a couple of days off work for recovery

What will the results look like?

You may see final results after three to four months once post-procedure swelling has completely subsided. You will have a more uniform and aesthetic contour between the abdomen and the pubic bone. These results should be long-lasting as long as you don’t have any significant weight fluctuations or go through pregnancy.

How often do you have to follow up?

After the initial post-op follow-ups with the doctor, patients should follow healthy exercise and diet for ideal long-lasting results.
